Surveying Lancashire

The oldest housing profile on our patch belongs to Lancashire, where more than a fifth of the stock around the towns we cover pre-dates 1900, and yet roughly half of our recent jobs here have been on homes built since 2000, with Preston much the busiest of our Lancashire towns. That gap between what stands and what is selling keeps us moving between two disciplines: solid walls, slate damp-proof courses and breathability in the terraced streets of east Lancashire, and workmanship, drainage and paperwork on the newer developments. On the coast at Blackpool and Fleetwood the Irish Sea does the wearing, so exposed elevations and their joinery get particular attention. Inland, the Ribble and the Calder carry some of the county’s highest flood-area counts around Preston, Burnley and Padiham, and we read the flood maps before we set off. Coal is a southern question in Lancashire, under Chorley, Leyland and the Skelmersdale side, and where the coalfield mapping shows workings we say so plainly.
